Stratford Islands

Intro
Stratford Islands proposes a spatial strategy to address the hidden fragmentation within one of London’s most connected transport hubs. Despite Stratford’s high public transport accessibility, elevated rail infrastructure and waterways create significant urban severance, limiting pedestrian permeability across the district. The project identifies five key destinations—Queen Elizabeth Olympic Park, London Stadium, Stratford Station, Westfield, and Stratford High Street—that define Stratford’s urban identity but remain weakly connected. In response, the strategy focuses on strengthening movement between these anchors rather than expanding the city fabric. Three triangular residual sites formed by railway lines are reimagined as new urban nodes, transforming leftover infrastructural land into active civic connectors. Through sectional design and environmental modelling, the proposal integrates pedestrian routes, public spaces, and development plots across multiple levels. The resulting masterplan shifts Stratford from a district defined by high transport accessibility to one characterised by strong urban permeability.
